Staffing ratios may sound like a good idea, but they presume all nurses, patients and communities are the same and that nurses are the only ones at the bedside. Today’s health care team is dynamic and flexible, and rigid ratios are prohibitive and come at the expense of patients and communities, as hospitals risk cutting services to comply.
Investments in retaining current nurses, attracting already-trained nurses from other states, and developing new nurses through common-sense legislation will get more nurses at the patient bedside.
